J. M. W. Turner, continued . . .

THE SURFACING OF A MASTERPIECE . . . Continued

The J. M. W. Turner A Goatherd in the Roman Campagna, dated 1834, is perhaps the Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), A Goatherd in the Roman Campagna, 1834artist's finest and most intricately-detailed watercolour.  The masterpiece captured so completely the attention of Welsh artist Penry Williams of the Royal Academy that the latter copied it in oils on at least two known occasions during his lifetime (1839 and 1874).  Almost identical in size (276 x 349 mm) to The Blue Rigi (297 x 450 mm) which sold at Christie's London on June 5, 2006, for £10.8 million, A Goatherd in the Roman Campagna is currently being awarded by The Escape Project to the successful bidder whose offer exceeds the reasonable reserve of £7.5 million.
